Giddy up!

Oh man. The events of the last few weeks include: noisy classes that seemed out of control, a series of hate notes from a student, and a nervous breakdown circa Wednesday/Thursday of last week. But not to worry! I’m still in action. Somehow, some way.

I sort of lost grip of reality for a little while there, let the kids get the better of me, forgot why I am doing this in the first place and quickly became an extremely unhappy person. Then I decided to screw it all, picked myself up with the help of lots of friends, and last night I hit the country western bar! Now, I know how to two-step TWO different ways- Zydeco style (Cajun) and cowboy style. And yes they are different. Sometimes I have to force myself into being 22 again, instead of a 40 year old woman. No offense to you middle-agers out there, but I’m not at a point in my life where I can go to bed at 10 pm every night, including weekends, and be a content person. So the country western bar brought me back to the fun person I used to be, and am trying to rediscover.

Don’t get me wrong, teaching is an incredible experience. But by incredible I mean traumatizing, emotional, wonderful, terrible, frustrating, annoying, beautiful, depressing, the list goes on…. It’s amazing that 10 year olds can get the better of you, but I wish so much for them and if they don’t seem to be successful, it’s hard not to be discouraged.

On a lighter note, there are several new updates in the Fabulous Fifth grade.
1. Jared and Ricquel are “going together.” Ricquel is probably 5’8 and a big girl, Jared is a scrawny short kid. I almost died when I heard. Sorrell and Jakobi are still going strong, which in the 5th grade world means they like to be in the same room, barely interact and then hug when one leaves.
2. We are going to see the painter Basquiat’s work at a Houston museum. The kids are excited, it should be really fun.
3. We went ice skating last week, and that was a blast! I was so glad I didn’t have to run homework hall for that trip. Seeing kids help each other learn to skate was so cute, and lots of kids wanted to hold my hand and skate, even the macho-y boys. It was pure sugary fun, unlike other celebrations which have an academic slant.

This Friday we are going to see a Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibit at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. It should be awesome! He was an artist who did graffiti-style and painted weird stuff like chairs and refrigerators. The kids have been studying him in art and they love it. It should be great!!

Well, things are looking up this week. It couldn't have gotten much worse, and it's getting better for sure!

Much love,
Sarah
