Talk about an awesome day....
Greetings from H-town!
Well, it's mixed to be back. I flew the red-eye in on Wed/Thurs and it was painful. Not as painful as wisdom teeth surgery, the recovery from which dominated my winter break. But they are out, all four of 'em, and it's nice to have that overwith. But I had four full days in Houston to get the millions of little things done that I never have time for, and play around, actually RELAX! Relaxing, what a novel idea. I got super ahead on lesson planning, although I don't want to jinx myself and get too comfortable.
Today was a nice ease into teaching because, lo and behold, half of the buses did not know we had school. Turns out every other school in Houston, besides ours, was off for the holiday but nope, we had to have school. No bitterness here. But that frustration was quickly vanished when we decided to scrap the normal day and take an impromptu fieldtrip to the aquarium. We only had 14 5th graders, so it was a nice group and we saw lots of cool stuff, like rainbow fish, a macaw, piranhas and even an anaconda! There were also randomly tigers, although I couldn't figure out exactly why they were at an aquarium. Why not, I guess. I really enjoy special days like that because we get to sort of kick back with the kids and have fun. We learned all kinds of stuff there. Do you know what kind of animal is the most dangerous in the rainforest? Answer below. An awesome welcome back day. And, I don't have to plan for tomorrow!
Last night, I read journals, my favorite activity of the week. Another mind-blowing story from Doneisha Martin, I'll post it next time. And in honor of my new year's resolution to not let school run my life entirely, I saw the movie "Brokeback Mountain" this weekend- phenomenal- and did lots of non-school related projects at home AND even worked out once! Man, this girl is on top of the world! Alright, I'm off my high horse and back to work...grumble, grumble.
With love,
Sarah B.
