Oh when the Saints go marching in....

Oh baby!! The Saints game rocked my face off. I really didn't care that we were in the nosebleeds. Just being there was enough for me. U2 opened, Green Day played, and the energy was incomparable.

My teaching has been getting more solid lately. I had a couple great days with our tough class, that re-motivated me. Sometimes I get a bit dismayed and feel like I am not reaching them. But in general, there is progress. I think my push lately to get them excited about what they are mastering has gotten them more invested. Some of my higher level kids were doing algebra last week while the rest of us practiced borrowing subtraction again. They did pretty well teaching themselves algebra! I was impressed.

And then there's days like today, when kids were bored with how many steps it takes to multiply 2-digit numbers. Many steps + Attention Deficit Disorder = problem! I've successfully gotten my homeroom on track, as always it's still the other class that's troubled. My homeroom is so nerdy. Like, we are reading Pippi Longstocking as a class together and I use it as a reward. We get to read Pippi if....type thing. One of my favorite parts of the day is teaching Deion to read, I can't remember if I mentioned that before. He can read sounds, but no words (FIFTH GRADE! 7 YEARS OF EDUCATION AND CAN'T READ, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY?) and I pull him out and teach him to read with the same book I learned to read from when I was young (Holler to ya, Dad!) It's so great to work with him individually and get him excited about reading : )

I was feeling burnout a couple weeks ago, so I took the day off after the Louisiana MS150. Which by the way, was epic. Not as epic as the lonestar version, but really what could be that epic?? It was flatter and the second day wasn't as hard. We had to crash on a convention center floor, which wasn't fabulous. We passed out at 7:30 pm which was the earliest I had been to sleep since i was 7. We yearned for the comforts of Texas ride, but alas, character building took place on that rock hard room filled with complete strangers in their nighties. I rocked my brand spankin' new blue Trek 1500 road bike. I am in debt now, but so pleased I bought it. Stoked!

The other crazy thing that happened at school lately, is that last Tuesday Ms. Wallace (the Asst Principal) came in 10 minutes before the end of the day and said for the next two days straight you have to read "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" to your class outloud. No, we don't have copies for them to read, they'll just have to listen to you read. So Cummins and I pulled an impressive feat- read a 200+ page book outloud to a class full of 31 fifth graders (more than half ADD-diagnosed) for approximately 8 hours. And they didn't revolt! We even had a golden ticket design competition, and prizes for the winners. Just another ridiculous thing about my school- everything is last minute, it drives me crazy, but ah, public education. Gotta love it.

That's all for now. I hope you all already have your Halloween costume planned...Mark and I are going to be quite the dynamic duo. We'll definitely outdo last year, when we dressed as each other : )

Teach it like it's hot!!

love, sarah b.
