Update from NO...
Working my way out of the work rut...with the help of my kids. We have had a lot of laughs in room 138 lately. Today there was an extended conversation about midgets- most of the time spent being me explaining to Jonathan Coleman that you cannot have a half-person on a bar graph, including a midget, who is in fact a whole person, not a half. The conversation led to a discussion of "little people, big world" and it went downhill from there...it was one of those moments when I just could not hold it together, so I gave up on my "teacher face" and let myself lose it, with the whole class laughing together. It was awesome! Much needed comic relief...
I've been shaming my homeroom into improving their behavior by calling them "sometimes-scholars" and asking them if they want to be "always-scholars"... They are highly impressionable and start to hang their heads low if I say I'm disappointed in them...pretty awesome. The other class would be like "what is disappointed and why are you wearing that funny shirt?"- but I love them too. I mean, they can have a wicked midget conversation, after all. And several boys in that class do a funny impression of me and Ms. Cummins...we can't tell if it's what Darryl thinks all white women sound like, or just us, but apparently we sound like whiny aliens.
Just beginning Thanksgiving break... we get a week off, so it's weird that I'm not going home. But dad's in Ohio, brothers' in Texas and mom's on that beach in Mexico where they end Shawshank Redemption. So New Orleans it is. Not a bad place and Turkey day with friends will be interesting/fun. In one month, we start deciding if our kids accelerate...that will probably be a rough process. We just found out Ronnie is 16 and in the 5th grade, which depresses me beyond words....how can so many people have failed this child? AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH. I have such an inspiring/depressing job.
A couple weeks back, I saw Duran Duran at voodoo fest and it pretty much rocked my world...they are pretty old, but still playing their europop like it's still in style. But really it's only in style in my mind, and few other places. New Orleans is still fun. Hope you are all well.
Love, Sarah
