Vacation is Sweet

First of all, let me recap the awesome dad visit to my classroom. As I predicted, the kids were obsessed with Mr. Bliss. He did a repeat of his eat raw vegetables out of soil spectacle (to teach the edible parts of plants) and I have a pic of the kids' reaction. It was pretty sweet. The kids each planted their own pea plants, and it was hilarious to see how they gave their plants "love" to help them grow- mostly hip hop lullabies and lots of styrofoam kissing. The kids were mesmerized by the wood crafts he brought and his general crazy antics. A lot of my kids tend to categorize white people as "crazy", but I think my dad took it to a new level. Or at least explained my craziness. They adored him and it was super fun to have him help in the class for 2 days.

The week before spring break dragged on forever. It was quite painful. Especially the super disorganized Easter Egg Hunt in which I had to get in the middle of a fight. Gerard was so outraged though that it took 5 big guys to hold him back. It was scary. My school does not have many fights, and girl fights are more common (and nastier- hair pulling, clawing, scary!). But we trekked on, trying to make at least some learning happen. And then with Good Friday came FREEDOM!

I left Friday and have seen lots of family since....flew in to SF. Met mom and her chihuahua Pepe. I'm obsessed with him. He is so cute and he doesn't make annoying yippy sounds that I generally associate with small dogs. I almost stole him in my bag. Then I took Aden's car and saw Kinriches, Shauna and Keith in LA at a fabulous latke dinner (lucky timing for me). Continued up 101 to Santa Barbara, where I had a nice visit with Nina and Terry and my cousins Gina and Jemal, and their baby Jaxon who is SO cute. Talking up a storm and approaching my favorite age - 3!! Nana is doing pretty well at her retirement community- more subdued, but doing pretty damn well for approaching 89! She is one of the most lively, and was singing showtunes, socializing and NOT enjoying bingo (clearly not stimulating enough for her- which was a good sign. She could find and place the chips way faster than me.)

On the way to San Fran stopped at Stanford and spent a few hours with my cousin Alana at her co-op Synergy. It was crazy...a nice reminder of the west coast, and what I am missing. RECYCLING! NUTRITIOUS FOOD! EARTH FRIENDLINESS! I will definitely return some day. But I"m not ready to leave my babies yet. One more year at least...

For the last couple days, I've literally been lounging around the house, convinced that my life is pretty boring without my students. I can tell I've been missing them, as I have been watching MTV hip hop shows and listening to Lil Wayne/Lloyd/Young Joc on replay (people I had never heard of before teaching).

I'm getting a little TOO used to vacation and need to transition back pretty soon or it's gonna be rough come Sunday/Monday. Thank god for summer break!
