School's....Out....For...Summer (doo doo doo doo)

School’s Out for Summer…for real this time.

I peaced out of New Orleans the day after summer school ended, so I could make it to San Fran in time to go backpacking in Big Sur with Aden and Dad. It had been 10+ years since all of us backpacked together, and it was so fun… freeze dried meals, a 10 mile day hike, lots of Crystal Light and really uncomfortable sleeping arrangements. Love it. Well, loved it until Dad and I took the wrong turn when we were 2 minutes from the car, ended up over a mile in the opposite direction and I had to run uphill in the scorching sun to catch Aden before he had a heart attack from worry. Ah, details.

I had my hesitations about spending all of July at home…but no regret here. It’s been great! Friends and cousins have been in and out for the past few weeks. I spent a day near Dorena Lake catching some rays, finished little projects for mom and dad, saw “Sicko” and even went to an Ems game where I got a signature mini-helmet filled with Prince Puckler’s ice cream. When I start to feel even a hint of boredom, Mom’s Chihuahua Pepe will jump onto my lap, almost as if on cue. I especially enjoyed meeting Hanna and Sabella, the Ethiopian twins my mom’s friend adopted a few years ago. They share custody of Pepe with my mom, and they are beautiful and fun.

And I almost forgot… the Oregon Country Fair. If you have never been, make sure to pencil in the second week of July, any year, onto your “Things to Do Before I Die” list. OCF is one of the biggest and best hippie festivals…. Everyone is so happy, the food is awesome, people on stilts greet you and you will see more painted boobs per capita than ever before. Or ever again, most likely. Drum circles everywhere, people trade more than buy and anything goes. Literally. My favorite part was the band of people dressed in shock lime green from head to toe (daisy dukes, hard hats, fishnet, you get the idea…) trying to campaign for the OCF mascot to be the lime, not the peach, as it has been for 38 years. “e-LIME-inate the peach… all fruits are created equal” they said. Priceless.

This week has been great so far. Left Eugene on Sunday, stayed in a swanky Portland hotel near the Pearl District. Tried to avoid Pepe’s arm humping and hit up the clothes outlets. Monday was Tacoma… saw Hilary and some old vball girls…they were froshies when I was a senior, and now they are seniors! Yikes! Went out to E-9, a classic UPS bar that hasn’t changed much. I’m super stoked because UPS is playing in Atlanta in August, which is totally driveable from New Orleans. I might cry and run out on the court to try to play, and may or may not get whisked away by authorities… I miss playing competitive volleyball so much! Hopefully I can contain myself….

Yesterday, we were a bit delayed by a stop at the Nordstrom Rack…. Which has up to size 13 in women’s shoes. Somehow I have grown into a 12 in some brands… which is equal parts frightening and perplexing. Size 11 Clark’s shoes for ½ off.. can’t argue with that. I love you Nordstrom Rack.

We finally made our way to Anacortes, WA where we were the second to last car allowed on the ferry to Orcas Island. Orcas is beautiful, peaceful and RAINY. Precipitation has not let up since we arrived. Which is a bit of a bummer, but since mom and I both love the rain, we’re dealing just fine. I hope it stops tomorrow, as some outdoor time would be nice. I mean reading and crosswords are fun and all, but biking through this island would be amazing. We’ll see what is in store for us.
