Thanksgiving, Part 1

Giving thanks. It's that time of year. There are so many things I am thankful for.

1) New Orleans. This city is one in a million. Balcony Bar, Magazine Street, the double trouble attack of gourmet dessert just around the corner (Sucre and La Divina Gelateria), walks in Audobon park, Rock’N’Bowl. Just one time eating at Dick and Jenny’s or Slim Goodies, one walk through the non-Bourbon section of the French Quarter or one time experiencing an impromptu second line down a neighborhood street on a beautiful Sunday morning, and you would be sold on New Orleans, too. People say "Good morning" or "How ya doin'" every time you pass them- something is wrong with you if you don't, or maybe you're just not from around here. Probably the number one reason I feel safe in my neighborhood is that I made friends with the people on my block. They remain nameless, but a head nod of assurance is all it takes for me to know that we have each other's back. Someone recently told me I am developing a Louisiana accent. So funny, but maybe true. This place does rub off on you in more ways than one.

2) My friends. You are everywhere- in Europe, New York, Africa, California, Portland, Iowa City, Missoula, Eugene and I love you all! Thanks for being there for me in so many ways! In NOLA, I might as well be in Antarctica for how often I see you, but I think of you often. Come down here for some serious fun, any time of year.

3) My family. I love you! That's all I need to say. My heart is still on the West Coast and you are the main reason.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Sarah
