Here, there and everywhere!
Inspired by my uncle Jeff, I am going to start from now, today. No worries about the fact that I am approximately 2 months behind on my blog. So here's the now, and then I will return to the past.
I am in beautiful Oregon and I have started to devise a plan for the future. I describe my life as a lease- I am on a year-to-year lease with New Orleans, and I signed up until May 09! The lease is by school year, obviously. That's how I roll. For some reason I am less enthused about returning to school this summer as I have been the last couple ones. It's damn near a sense of dread- I keep counting the days of vacation I have left. (Apologies to all of you with 'normal' jobs who do not get summers off). I have interpreted these heavy feelings as meaning I should think about what's next. Guaranteed that the day I set foot in the classroom with my new kids, I will be fine. But it's exciting to look to the future. I have been completely okay with my lack of a 5- or 10-year plan, which many of my crazy Type-A friends have. Some of the possibilities floating around my mind including going back to grad school, spending a year abroad working and/or traveling, starting a nonprofit, moving to San Francisco or Portland. I love New Orleans, but I can best describe my life there as stagnantly fun. No particular complaints- great friends, good job, amazing city. But it's time for a change. Maybe temporary or maybe permanent, but a change is in order. I think I will enter this year with the thoughts that it might be my last, for now. A return is always possible.
Oregon in the summer is beautiful. New Orleans in the summer is not beautiful. Loving the west coast, in other words. Went to Sarah Hesseltine's (UPS vball friend) amazing mountain wedding in WA state last weekend. The wedding was at a ski lodge, and it's a guaranteed fun time when the vball girls get together. Pit stops in PDX were crucial- Kristen cut and dyed my hair on the way up (it gets funkier every time- and I love it! Go KH!) and I saw Angela's cute new coffeeshop, Speedboat, on the way down. Plus, Nash my super cute talking nephew. (Technically my step-cousin once removed, but doesn't that sound ugly?) Auntie Sarah has a much better ring to it :)
Another highlight of the summer so far was Nana Bliss' 90th birthday/Bliss Family Reunion. Despite a recent stroke, Nana is doing amazingly well for her age, and seemed to very much enjoy the presence and warmth of so much family around her. I also very much enjoyed the Eugene Olympic Trials. My flight times home for the summer were purchased arbitrarily months ago, but coincidentally included the Olympic Trials and Hess' wedding. Awesome! I have never enjoyed track and field so much as I did last week. Watching the hometown sweep of the men's 800 meters by all local boys was magical. The Trials were like a three-ring circus, and I felt like a little girl trying to keep track of all of it, pointing out to my mom the various events going on. The finish-line seats, 20 rows up, were amazing and Eugene easily defended the title of Track Town, USA. Actually, Track Town, World would probably be more accurate. I can't wait for Eugene 2012!
Soaking up Eugene awesomeness for a few more days, then back to NOLA for appointments, errands, etc. Soon, I'm off to NYC for one last hurrah before summer is officially over for me. I need to stop counting the days and maybe the time will stretch out for longer. It's all psychological, right?
