Spelling Bee, Geeky kids and Mardi Gras is a-comin'!
End of January. 2009 is already zipping by! School has been a roller coaster lately- very up and down. High highs and low lows. Lots of days when I felt like everything was going perfectly, and an equal amount where I feel like I am messing everything up. Alas.
Much of January was swallowed up with preparing 9 students for the District Spelling Bee- although in typical form, after all that work, 2 came down sick, 2 got suspended and one was just a big ol' no show. It is so hard sometimes to encourage my kids to set goals and stick to them. That whole idea of doing "whatever it takes" to reach your goals and prioritize is not second nature for them. It is an uphill battle! And the spelling bee was something they chose to do....
I am enjoying teaching 7th life science much more than 6th grade physical science. We have some amazing discussions that just take flight, where by the end of the hour, kids are arguing about inherited vs. learned traits with so much certainty you would think they are discussing why Lil Wayne is a hotter rapper than Lil Boosie. I love love love geeking my kids out to that point. Getting them so excited to learn new things is the most rewarding part of the job. Hands down.
Two more months until "The Test." Plenty of time, but every moment counts. I am trying to smile more and be more relaxed about it, because my students who had me last year have told me on numerous occasions that I am way meaner this year. I think having a self-contained class of 10 was just too comfortable. Having to deal with 41, over half of whom have behavior problems, that just wears ya out after awhile.
Outside of school, volleyball is still going well. We are 4-1, and had our best game yet on Friday. It was super scrappy, and we had one rally with 12 or so times crossing the net. Just returned from Aden and Meredith's engagement party in Houston. It is always fun to see them, and get away, but coming back I always feel that sense of dread- back to the real world! No more playing with cute little nieces, eating at Buffalo Grill (I had not been back to Houston since I left in June of '06... still miss some of the food!), seeing family. Such a short trip... kind of a tease, and now back to the daily grind. At least Mardi Gras is coming up SUPER soon... and for the first time, I have guests visiting for the occasion... Can't wait.
I still wake up every day ecstatic that Obama is in office.
With love,
Sarah
